Probe connectors are the piece of the probe that plugs into the ultrasound system. Most connectors are either pinned or pin-less with robust build qualities to stand up against wear and tear. Unfortunately, they still break. Broken pins, locking shafts, knobs, and poor connections are all quite common with probes for both free standing and portable machines. One may be facing several types of problems while using the ultrasound machine probes. They may be one or more of the following:
1. Poor quality image: Poor image may be due to
*Cracked or air bubbles on lens
*Connector issue
*Crystal damage
*Tears on the sheath
2. Physical damage or broken housing: Physical damage may be due improper handling, dropping of probe, poor storage etc.
3. Noise: Noise may be due to broken cable, damaged / broken pins in connector or electrical interference.
*Breakage of probe connector pins may be caused by improper insertion or connection.
*Damage to cable occurs due to cables being ridden by some wheels or closure of drawers without proper placement of the probe inside, etc.
4. No image: If there is image being received, it could be a result of probe cable – connector breakage, probe compatibility issue or software issue.
Regular cleaning using the disinfectant of the ultrasound machine, probe, and other peripheral devices is a good practice to apply. The fan cooling system of an ultrasound machine should be functioning well. Overheating causes technical issues. It’s better to keep the machine cool.
A person who is not very experienced with the probe might handle it poorly. It’s better to let an expert handle the machine to keep it safe. You must be gentle with the handling of cords, buttons, and peripherals.
A probe is a part that comes in contact with the patients. Try to check if the connector pins are not damaged or bent. Daily monitor the membrane of a probe. Consider regular servicing or at least a quick repair even for minor defect
