Knowledge point

What is an ultrasound guided biopsy?

A biopsy is a procedure to take a small sample of tissue from a certain place in your body. A very thin biopsy needle is inserted through your skin to the area where the sample needs to be collected.

The ultrasound scanner uses high frequency sound waves which reflect back off your internal organs to make an image on the screen. This image is then used to guide the needle to the right place.A small piece of tissue is then collected. This sample or 'biopsy' is sent to the laboratory to be analysed.

  • Needle guides attach to the ultrasound transducer, directly or with a bracket, and improve needle placement accuracy and needle visibility.
  • Needle guides will hold the needle in place: in the ultrasound plane for In-Plane approaches, or perpendicular to the ultrasound beam for Out-of-Plane procedures.
  • Ultrasound needle guides will hold the needle in place, on a predictable path, leading to improved workflow and reduced prodcedure time. During In-Plane approaches, the needle is constantly held in the ultrasound plane for increased visualization.
  • The constant tracking of the tip and shaft of the needle allows for a reduced needle manipulation and a facilitated navigation toward hard-to-reach targets.
The patient safety and confort are improved as the risks of damaging surrounding structures are minimized.

What are the benefits?

Other tests that you have had, such as blood tests, ultrasoundscans, or CT scans have shown an abnormality. The doctorslooking after you have decided that you should have a biopsyto help them find out what the abnormality might be and whyit is there. They will then be able to decide on the most suitabletreatment for you.

What are the risks?

Ultrasound-guided biopsy is generally considered a safe

procedure. There is a small risk of bleeding where the needle hasbeen inserted.Other small risks vary according to which part ofthe body is being biopsied.

The doctor performing the biopsy will discuss the specific riskswith you before asking your permission to perform the biopsy.
